Overhauling the way funders support the non profit sector with their organisational development

The Challenge

Organisational development is often pushed to the bottom of the list for voluntary, charitable and social enterprise sector organisations. Often they don’t have the funding, skills or time to dedicate to it. We were asked by The Lloyd’s Bank Foundation and The National Lottery Community Fund to consider how they could help the charity sector be more consistent and focused on improving their organisational development.

Our solution

We designed a strategic programme of work for them, aimed at radically overhauling the way voluntary, charitable and social enterprise sector organisations are supported with their organisational development. The programme will give organisations common industry-wide language, standards and ways of measuring progress, as well as practical resources to draw from.

Our approach

We worked with a large group of partners to understand the needs of voluntary, charitable and social enterprise sector organisations, and what is helping and hindering organisational change for them.

We also conducted a meta review into good practice for organisational development and ways of supporting the sector more to be effective and efficient.

This included desk research, a large scale literature review and one-on-one depth interviews with over 30 funders, support partners and voluntary, charitable and social enterprise sector organisations, as well as a series of co-creative workshops with the wider project teams at The Lloyd’s Bank Foundation and The National Lottery Community Fund.
